Exploding Box

This video tutorial shows you how to create an Exploding Box. I give you step by step instructions of how to make the box and decorate it even down the the finishing touches of how to make the paper bow and large paper flower.

Measurements to go with Video.

To make the Box you will need 4 sheets of 12×12 card stock.
You will need another sheet to make the Tags and also some pattrened paper to decorate approximately 5 sheets of 12×12.
I used a Scrapbooking kit from www.scrapbookingkitsrus.co.uk to make this project. http://scrapbookingkitsrus.co.uk/kits-for-sale/2013-retreat-annalee-kit/

Box – First Layer;

One sheet of 12×12 card score at 4″ and 8″. Then do a quarter turn and score at 4″ and 8″ again.

Cut 8 patterned paper mats measuring 3 3/4″ x 3 3/4″

Box Lid;

Cut card 7 1/4″ x 7 1/4″

Then score at 1  1/2″ and 5  3/4″

Cut a patterned paper mat measuring 4″ x 4″.  Plus 4 mats measuring 42 x 1 1/4″ for the sides of the lid.

Make a paper bow use the template from the internet ( search for DCWV Paper Bows and download the template)

Inside Page – Second Layer;

Cut card 11 3/4″ x 11 3/4″

Then score at 4″ and 7 1/2″. Then do a quarter turn and score again at 4″ and 7 3/4 “.

Cut 8 patterned paper mats measuring 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2”

Tags – Cut 4 tags measuring 3 1/2″ x 3 3/4″.  Plus 4 patterned paper mats for the tags of 3 1/2″ x 3 1/4″.

Inside Page – Third Layer;

Cut card 11 1/2″ x 11 1/2″

Then score at 1/2″ and 4″. Then do a quarter turn and repeat score lines, do this on each quarter turn.

Cut 8 patterned paper mats measuring 3″ x 3 3/4″

Tags –  Cut 4 tags measuring 3 1/4″ x 3 3/4″. Plus 4 patterned paper mats for the tags of 3 1/2″ x 3″.

Centre of Inside Box;

Cut a mat from card stock of 3 1/4″ x 3 1/4″. Then make your flower to go on top of this mat as your centre piece. I used the Tim Holtz Tattered Foral Die and cut 4 of the large flowers.

      Hi Maureen
      If you watch my video tutorial I make this project along with you. This is not the easiest exploding box due to all the pocket layers and that is why a Video Tutorial is the best way to explain it. Many os my subbies are newbie crafters and they find watching the video and crafting with me is the best way to make this exploding box project.
      The written instructions on my website are there as a reference guide as many of my craft followers banch make these projects to sell for charity.
      So I hope watching the video will help you.

        Dawn, thank you so much for this great tutorial. I have made many boxes for friends both decorated and blank. Recently a friend asked me to make her one but she wants to add one more layer. I am having quite the time figuring out the measurements for this fourth layer. Please help.

          If I remember with this project it is very hard to add a fourth layer. One because the pockets will be so small and also you then have the problem with folding all the layers up to fit inside the box lid. The only thing I could suggest is you getting some A3 card and making a bigger layer on the outside however, then you will have to change the size of your lid.

    What other sites do you get your card from? I’m really struggling to find the right type of card to make this with & all the ones I like from the website like are out of stock
    🙂
    PS: Best tutorial to follow that I’ve found 🙂

      Hello Becky
      So glad you are enjoying my tutorials and finding them useful, I do love to share.
      I use normal scrapbooking cardstock in 12×12.
      Some makes I use are Bazzill, American Crafts, cor ordinations to name just a few and you can get these from craft shops, online or shopping channels like Create & Craft.
      If I use A4 again this is just from the craft store.
      And A3 I source from a local Online Suppliers.
      So just search on the internet for 12 x 12 cardstock if your craft shop does not have any and look for sellers with good P&P rates.
      Hope this helps you? Dawn x

    I had watched the other video that was so fast you couldn’t follow it. Yours is great. I am in the US and was wondering about the glue you used. I didn’t catch the name on the video, is it something only found in the UK?

      Hello Kathie
      Thank you for your kind comment. The glue I use is Collall All Purpose Glue http://dawnsinspirations.com/collall-all-purpose-glue-now-in-the-us/ and yes you can get it in the US. If you craft store does not sell it you can get it online for all the details see the link.
      Hope this helps?
